Critical Mass

A Dark & Caustic Comedy

by Deb Margolin

"An artful and insightful work about our compulsion to inflict opinions on one another, and beyond that, a treatise on how we smother our loneliness with words."

-Peter Marks, New York Times

In Critical Mass, a Narrator – artist, mother, investigator of society's foibles – takes us on an absurd and darkly humorous exploration of humanity’s impulse towards criticism, from its most elevated to its most base. Meanwhile, a troupe of actors desperately works to prove their worth to a theater critic, and the Critic himself goes through an existential crisis about his role in these actors’ lives and the value of his work. In the end, the only choice left is to dive desperately into human connection.

Amidst madcap costume and set changes, hilariously backward social scenarios, and haunting original music in the tragic grandeur of the Marigny Opera House, a mirror is turned on the actors, the critic, and the audience in turn, as we plumb what really goes on behind the curtains of our lives.
